The rehabilitation of Emerson Place and surrounding properties by Neighbors of Watertown continues the nonprofit's contributions to preserving historic buildings in the city of Watertown.

Renovated apartments in the century-old row house are getting the finishing touches; several units have already been rented. In addition, a dozen nearby homes rehabilitated in the $4.1 million project will also provide low-income rental housing. Some of the restored homes will be available to first-time home buyers.

Gone are several eyesores that had detracted from the State Street neighborhood. Neighbors of Watertown, with support from the city of Watertown, transformed Emerson Place and surrounding buildings into decent housing opportunities.

Without Neighbors of Watertown's intervention, the buildings may well have gone the way of other dilapidated structures that were lost to the demolition crews.

The work also brought new sidewalks, lighting and water, and sewer lines to the area.

The restoration will help maintain the vitality of the neighborhood by keeping and drawing residents attracted to renovated, affordable housing.

Neighbors of Watertown has been a major player in revitalizing downtown Watertown. It has also restored the Brighton Hotel, Buck Building, Burdick Building and the Marcy Building. It demonstrates what can be achieved by a dedicated staff and board.
