Neighbors Of Watertown   -  Essential to the Community

Neighbors of Watertown, Inc., 112 Franklin Street, is a not-for-profit corporation, formed in 1967 and incorporated in 1969 under the laws of the state of New York. Neighbors became a Neighbor-hood Preservation Company in 1981 funded by the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal with its service area encompassing the city of Watertown.

    Neighbors has, over the years been instrumental in the downtown revitalization process. Recent rehabilitation projects include the Brighton Apartments, the Buck Apartments and the Burdick Building. Currently, Neighbors is rehabilitating The Marcy on State Street.

   The Greater Watertown Chamber of Commerce has called Neighbors of Watertown, Inc. "an essential organization to this community. Its record of accomplishments is outstanding. The evidence is very visible throughout the city."

Neighbors is currently administering an Owner Occupied Rehabilitation Program utilizing HOME funds awards through the North Country Home Consortium. It is expected that upon completion, twenty-three very low and low-income owner occupied households will have their homes rehabilitated. In addition, Neighbors of Watertown, Inc. has recently been awarded a grant by the North Country Home Consortium for a First Time Homebuyers Program. It is anticipated that nine grants will be awarded to very low and low-income homebuyers that want to purchase their first home in the city of Watertown.

Neighbors was honored to receive the Governor's Award for Excellence in Housing at the 1994 Governor's Housing Conference in "recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of housing and human services, and for furthering the state's efforts to prevent or ameliorate community deterioration in areas where low-cost housing is located".
