Neighbors of Watertown Inc. will be honored later this month for its efforts to revitalize a
historic downtown building.
The nonprofit housing agency is one of four recipients of a $2,500 Community Renaissance
Award sponsored by Niagara Mohawk Corp. There were 58 projects statewide under
consideration for the awards.
The four awards will be given at the Economic Development Academy held during the
New York State Association of Counties meeting Nov. 29 in Saratoga Springs.
Neighbors of Watertown is being recognized for its $3.8 million renovation of the historic
Marcy Building on Polk Street.
"We're thrilled," said Gary C. Beasley, Neighbors executive director. "It's great to have
this recognition and it's great for Watertown."
Neighbors of Watertown renovated the Marcy building into retail business and professional
office space. The project included replacement of glass panes in windows throughout the
building, while keeping the historic large window frames intact.
Because the Marcy Building is in an Economic Development Zone, tenants have been
eligible for special financial assistance and tax breaks. The main building is 50,000 square
feet, and there is an annex that is about 8,000 square feet.
Neighbors will be given an H.H. Richardson Community Landmark Award, which is given
for revitalization of a historic landmark project.
Other award recipients are the Little Falls Waterfront Revitalization Project, which will
receive the Thomas Edison Lighting Award; Paper Mill Island Project, Baldwinsville, which
will receive the Frederick Law Olmsted Community Planning Award, and the Poestenkill
Library Project, also receiving an H.H. Richard Community Landmark Award.
One of the four projects will be announced as the Grand Award recipient at the breakfast
and will be given an additional $2,500.
